Tae-yeon was born in Jeonju, South Korea on March 9, 1989. She is trained in singing and dancing. Taeyeon was discovered in the 2004 SM Entertainment's 8th Annual Best Contest winning Best Singer 1st Place & Grand Award in the contest. In 2004, she was featured in The One's song "You Bring Me Joy" before debuting as Girls' Generation's leader. She is a 2008 graduate of Jeonju Art High School and was awarded the school's Lifetime Achievement Award.

While on vacation in Korea, she and her sister were scouted in a shopping mall by S.M Entertainment and joined the company in 2000. She trained for seven years as a trainee before debuting as part of the Korean girl group Girls' Generation.
Her younger sister, Krystal, is a member of the Korean girl group f(x). They are both currently active in their groups, being signed under S.M. Entertainment.

Sunny was born on May 15, 1989 in Los Angeles, California, and moved to Kuwait while she was still an infant. Her family moved to South Korea around the time of the Gulf War. She shares the same birthday with her two older sisters (Lee Eun-kyu and Lee Jin-kyu). Her father was in the college band Hwaljooro with Bae Chul-soo. She is the niece of Lee Soo Man, the founder of SM Entertainment.
In 1998, Sunny entered Starlight Entertainment and became a trainee for five years before transferring to Starworld where she became a member of a duet called "Sugar" which never debuted. One of her older sisters was the manager for Sugar, but when the group disbanded, she became active in other parts of the music industry.
In 2007, Sunny was recommended by the singer Ayumi, who transferred to SM Entertainment. After several months of training under SM Entertainment, Sunny debuted as a member of Girls' Generation that same year.

Tiffany was born in San Francisco, California, in the same hospital as fellow band-mate Jessica Jung. Although both born in California, the two would coincidentally end up attending and graduating from the same high school in Seoul, Korea Kent Foreign School, during their preparations for debut in the same group. Tiffany grew up in Diamond Bar, California, attending South Pointe Middle School and Diamond Bar High School.
Tiffany was scouted whilst performing on stage in her home country. She was invited to audition at the SM Entertainment Starlight Casting System and joined the company on October 2004 in Los Angeles, California at age 15. Despite initial objections from her father, she recalls packing up her former life and moving to South Korea after receiving the permission to do so within three weeks of making the decision. She trained for 3 years and 7 months before debuting.
Tiffany is the youngest of three siblings. Her older sister studied anthropology at Berkeley. For much of her early career when approached with the topic of mothers or family, Tiffany would often refer to her father or both parents; on a radio broadcast she stated that she missed her mother who was far away and she had not seen her in some time. However, in late 2009 she said for the first time in public that her mother had already died. She later said that her mother had died two years before she herself became a trainee, and that she is somewhat distant with her father, all of her immediate family living overseas. In August 2009 Tiffany was absent from a group filming in order to fly to the US and attend the funeral of her grandfather.

She auditioned for SM Entertainment at the age of 11 through SM 2000 Casting System. Hyoyeon said that her reason was her mother bringing her to the offices of S. M. Entertainment in the hopes of meeting H.O.T. She then danced in her audition show. In 2004, along with Super Junior's Siwon, she was sent to study Chinese in Beijing. Hyoyeon was also picked as Korea's #1 Idol dancer on Star News.
